Why Do Churches Make The Worst Shirts?

Frankly, I don’t know why.  But I’m posting this to see if anyone out there has the answer.

I have dozens of free t-shirts from all over the country from church outreaches, camp retreats, summer camps, and other events put on by churches.

I have a few that I am willing to wear in public.  But the vast majority of them make great weekend paint-job shirts.  I know this is a matter of taste.  And I am not a clothing designer.  But why do these shirts have bad base colors, poorly designed prints, and often corny re-makes of popular brands and logos?

I understand that the bottom line and functionality drive the making of these shirts.  But why make shirts that people will be embarrassed to wear anywhere else than the event itself?  If you’re going to make shirts for people, I think there is a way to make them tastefully so that people will wear them again.

Often, it is not the actual content of the shirt that bothers me.  I think it is great to proudly wear a shirt with a particular message such as Scripture or an aspect of our faith in Christ.  It is the design and stealing of copyrighted brands that bother me.  Why can’t we as Christians be creative and artistically excellent in our own right?  Many Christians out there are.  Let’s let them be in charge of the t-shirt design for church events.
