Breakfast with Jesus

We can be pretty sure that Jesus wasn’t a vegetarian because he called his disciples over for a fish breakfast in one of his post-resurrection appearances.  This was the original church fish fry.  It doesn’t say that Jesus partook of the fish, but the meal was definitely his idea – so break out the tilapia!

John 21:12-14 (NIV)…..

12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord.  13 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish.  14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.

This happened after Jesus told the struggling fishermen to try casting their nets on the right side of the boat (they didn’t know the person instructing them was Jesus yet).  They could barely haul in the enormous load of 153 fish (perhaps the number is significant due to being a triangular number).

I find it remarkable that Jesus posed so simple a request as “come and have breakfast” to his followers after his resurrection.  Perhaps our relationship with Christ can be nurtured when we start our day by simply sitting in his presence and hearing his voice through prayer and his Word.
